West Virginia University is a popular college campus and is known all over the world. In 2007, WVU implemented a 10 screen digital signage network with a charge to have a unified platform for emergency notifications. By 2012 their network matured to the point they wanted to leverage interactivity and wayfinding. While there were a few large form interactive options in the market, WVU could not find a solution that met all of their goals; reliable touch, a depth of less than 4” when flush mounted, and an overall clean installation.
Customizing WVU’s Solution
Working with Steve “Chewie” Stavar (Digital Signage Specialist for WVU), TSItouch designed a solution to promote touch interaction with the digital signage and interactive directories across the network. With WVU’s experience with Samsung’s quality and price points, the products manufactured have utilized Samsung DM, PM, and QM series with ShadowSense or Projective Capacitive (PCAP) touch technologies protected by antiglare tempered glass and customized extended bezels to provide an innovative, user-friendly touch experience. ShadowSense touch technology was first chosen because it wasn’t as susceptible to ambient light sources compared to the Infrared touch technology and price point. With gains in PCAP technologies and cost, PCAP was introduced to WVU. They began to purchase more orders with PCAP touch technology because of the increase in accuracy of touch and allowed a zero-bezel appearance. With TSItouch’s ability to customize our offering, WVU’s solution has a custom bezel of 4 7/8” bezel on the surround for a clean ADA compliant installing when flush mounted on the wall. The operating system, mounting hardware, etc. were enclosed within the final product.
To drive the content displayed on the InfoStations, WVU utilizes Four Winds Interactive (FWI) a partner of TSItouch. WVU leverages FWI to manage the multiple steams of content to be holistically displayed on their digital signage network at four regional locations across West Virginia. WVU has been able to create custom experiences on a screen by screen basis. This includes their standard installations along with customized honor and donor installations.

Reviewing WVU’s Results
By providing directions and information displays in a touch interaction solution, WVU was able to offer a better public service and content on demand. “The products we have purchased from TSI have helped to continue the saturation of digital signage at WVU while giving our monitors’ screens more protection. They also give us the ability for interactivity in the future and a clean installation without needing to add on any additional material to the sides of our monitor to hide the mounts and wire from a profile view of the installation,” said Steve Stavar. Connecting interactive touch with digital signage, WVU is engaging more and more with their students, staff, and visitors.
